Mount Vernon, Ga.- The Calumet College Baseball team arrived in Georgia on Friday to play Brewton-Parker College in a three-game series to start off their Spring Break trip. Coming off of a win against Lincoln Christian on Tuesday, the Crimson Wave were stunned by the Barons in the first game of the series on Friday as the Wave lost 20-4 in 7 innings of play. Saturday the team came back with a big 6-4 win in game two, and the final game of the series was a tough 9-inning 12-11 loss as the Crimson Wave finished the series 1-2.
In the game one 20-4 loss, Marc Cervantes started off on the mound for the Crimson Wave and was followed by Giovanni Herrera, Austin Crocker, and Christopher Pantaleon who combined for a total of 6 strikeouts but allowed 12 hits and 14 walks. Michael Machnic and Bubba Davenport led the Crimson Wave offense, Mechanic with two doubles and Davenport with a double and two RBIs.
Game two's 6-4 win was started with William LePretre Jr. on the mound for the 1st inning where the Barons scored two runs, Zach Zborowski came in the 2nd inning and shut the Barons down for 4 innings. After a couple of walks in the 5th inning, Gerardo Hernandez came in to pitch for the Crimson Wave and finished out the game as the Wave got their win. Leading the offense for the Crimson Wave were Gabriel Quinones and Machnic, both going 2-4 in game two. Quinones had an RBI in the 5th inning after a single to left and Machnic had an RBI in the 3rd after a single to right and 3 RBIs in the 5th inning after a triple.
The final game of the series was a tough 9-inning loss 12-11 with Bubba Davenport starting on the mound for the Crimson Wave. Davenport went 5 innings for the Wave giving up 6 hits, 2 walks, and 7 runs with 3 strikeouts. In the 6th inning, the Crimson Wave had several pitching changes as Zach Costello came in to pitch, but after 2 walks Max Everaert took to the mound, and after another 2 walks Anthony Rivera went in to pitch for the Wave. Rivera would pitch 3 innings and finish the game for the Wave giving up 3 hits with just one run.
Offensively the Crimson Wave started off the game scoring a run in the 1st and 2nd innings, but in the 4th inning the Wave took the lead as they hit all the way through the lineup. The 4th inning started off with a double by Yashion Boswell and a single by Sean Moore followed by a single and RBI by Quinones to get the inning started. From there the Crimson Wave scored 5 more runs off of a Machnic RBI, Sergio Olivares' triple and 2 run RBI, Joseph Castillo's RBI, and Boswell's RBI. In the 6th inning, the Crimson Wave scored 3 more runs after Quinones tripled and hit a 2 run Machnic homer. From there, the Wave's bats were quiet and the Barons caught up and won the game 12-11 in the bottom of the 9th after a 1 out homerun.
The Crimson Wave are traveling to Florida for the rest of their Spring Break trip with their first games on Monday against Grand View (IA) and Siena Heights at the Warner University Invite.
