Baseball splits doubleheader at IU-South Bend
Granger, IN - The Calumet College Baseball team moved their Tuesday matchup with IU-South Bend to Monday to avoid the weather. The new game day didn't seem to faze the Crimson Wave as they defeated the Titans in game one 6-4, earning their second CCAC win of the season, and losing a close 4-0 ballgame in game two.
Game 1- CCSJ 6, IUSB 4
In game one of the doubleheader, Bubba Davenport got the start on the mound and would go the distance for the Crimson Wave pitching a full 7 innings. Davenport gave up 8 hits, 3 earned runs, 4 HBPs, and earned 2 strikeouts in 35 batters faced. The Crimson Wave and Davenport had a rocky start, as the Titans had a hit, walk, and two straight HBP that put them on the board first with 2 runs. In the 2nd inning, the Crimson Wave also took advantage of bases-loaded walks scoring themselves 2 runs. The game stayed tied at 2-2 until the bottom of the 6th inning when a 2 out error allowed a runner to score and the Titans to take a 3-2 lead. The Crimson Wave held their composure in the top of the 7th and with Michael Machnic and Nicholas Anderson on base, Sergio Olivares singled to score the tying run. The Titans made a pitching change, but that didn't phase the Wave as Idan Ortiz singled and scored Anderson to give the Wave a 4-3 lead. The Titans started to shake under the pressure, a wild pitch scored Olivares and after 2 outs an error kept the inning going and Ortiz scored to make the score 6-3. IU-South Bend tried to make a comeback in the bottom of the 7th inning, stringing a couple of hits together and scoring a run all with 2 outs, Davenport and the Crimson Wave get out of the inning and take the 6-4 win. Anderson led the Wave offensively going 3-3 with an HBP and two doubles.
Game 2- CCSJ 0, IUSB 4
Game two of the doubleheader was a bit tougher as the Crimson Wave couldn't quite get the offense going. Zach Zborowski started on the mound for the Wave and went a solid 3 innings with 2 strikeouts, 5 hits, and 2 runs. The Titans got the jump on the Wave, scoring their first run in the bottom of the first inning. In the bottom of the 4th inning, after a single and double, Anthony Rivera came in to pitch for Zborowski, and another hit scored the Titans second run of the game. Rivera shut down IU-South Bend for a couple of innings until the bottom of the 6th, after two walks Gerardo Hernandez went in to pitch and finished the inning. Hernandez and the Crimson Wave defense kept the Titans at bay for another inning till the bottom of the 8th, after an error and a hit IU-South Bend scored two runs off a single to bring their lead to 4-0. Christopher Pantaleon went to the mound for Hernandez and finished out the inning for the Wave. As the top of the 9th inning came around, the Crimson Wave couldn't pull together a hit and lost the game 4-0.
The Crimson Wave's next series is Friday and Saturday against St. Francis.
