Crimson Wave Baseball splits doubleheader with UHSP to earn first win of season
The CCSJ baseball team picked up its first win of the season as they split a doubleheader against University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy on Friday, February 23 at the Harris-Stowe State University Stars Park. The Wave dropped the first game 13-12, but bounced back in the second game with a 7-2 victory.

St. Louis, MO. – The Calumet College of St. Joseph baseball team picked up its first win of the season on Friday, February 23 after splitting a doubleheader against University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy at the Harris-Stowe State University Stars Park. The Wave fell in Game 1 13-12 before bouncing back in Game 2 with a 7-2 victory.
Game 1: UHSP 13, CCSJ 12
In Game 1, the Crimson Wave got off to a great start, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Later in the fourth inning, CCSJ scored four more runs to extend the lead to nine. UHSP would rally back scoring three runs at the bottom of the fourth inning and posted a game-high seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take its first lead of the game.
Calumet College would tie the game at the top of the sixth inning before UHSP scored two more runs to retake the lead. The Wave would continue to fight scoring another two runs in the final inning, only to lose to a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh.
Game 2: CCSJ 7, UHSP 2
In Game 2, the Crimson Wave got off to a similar start to game one, posting three runs in the third inning. Gio Pappas fly out to center field bought Darrius Little enough time to make his way home for the first score of Game 2. Later in the inning, Josef Selby smacked an RBI double that brought Tommy Benson and Michael Machnic home.
With a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth inning, CCSJ tacked on four more runs. Nicholas Anderson scored after an RBI by Tyler Brody and both Nino Barbosa and Matthew Mortrud scored after an RBI double by Benson. Machnic was able to record a sacrifice fly out that brought Little home and extended the lead to six.
UHSP was able to score one run in the bottom of the seventh but Calumet College was able to close it out while only allowing one hit in the final inning.
Five different players had a hit in game two while both Benson and Selby had two RBIs each. Kail Baughman was at the mound for 6 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs, while striking out seven batters in the process.

The Crimson Wave will face UHSP again in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 24 beginning at 12:00 PM CT.
