Crimson Wave Baseball picks up first win on Florida road trip
After back-to-back losses this past weekend, the CCSJ Baseball team bounced back with a 17-6 win over Cornerstone at the Northeast Regional Park on Monday, March 4.
Davenport, FL – After back-to-back losses this past weekend, the Calumet College of St. Joseph baseball team bounced back with a 17-6 win over Cornerstone on Monday, March 4 at the Northeast Regional Park. CCSJ recorded 10 hits in first win on the Florida road trip.
The game began with both teams getting off to a slow pace, going scoreless for the first two innings. It wasn't until the bottom of the third where Cornerstone scored two runs to score the first runs of the game.
CCSJ answered back with a big stretch at the top of the fourth inning, scoring 11 runs. Throughout the stretch, Nino Barbosa, Michael Machnic, Tyler Brody, Josef Selby and Nicholas Anderson all had base hits that scored six runs. Darrius Little and Tommy Benson were both walked at the plate, which led to two more runs being scored. To cap the stretch, Michael Perry smacked a home run to left field that scored three runs and gave the Wave an 11-2 lead.
CCSJ added two more runs at the top of the fifth inning with two errors by Cornerstone.
To start off the seventh inning, CCSJ had an eight run lead and scored three more runs to put the game out of reach. Both Brennan Nichols and Perry were walked at the plate, bringing Selby and Brody home. Shortly after, Barbosa hit a sacrifice fly to center field that brought Anderson home.
Perry stuffed the stat sheet in the win, going 1-2 at the plate with four RBIs, three walks and a home run. Both Brody and Selby went 2-4 at the plate with three runs scored apiece. In 4 2/3 innings pitched, Zach Zborowski allowing seven hits and five earned runs. Benson took the mound for 2 1/3 innings and gave up two hits. In their time at the mound, Zborowski struck out four batters and Benson struck out three.
