CCSJ hands top-seeded Olivet Nazarene its 1st conference loss of the season with 96-94 double overtime victory
Whiting, IN – The Calumet College of St. Joseph men's basketball team won a double overtime thriller vs Olivet Nazarene 96-94 on Wednesday evening at the Rittenmeyer Center. The Crimson Wave handed the Tigers their first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss of the season. The win not only propelled CCSJ's standing within the conference, but it's also the second time this season the Wave have constructed a four-game winning streak.
How it Happened
In the first half, CCSJ (9-7, 5-4) found themselves in an early 10-0 deficit after missing its first four shots. Junior guard Malik Petty was the first to get the Wave on the board with a 3-pointer a little over three minutes into the contest.
Olivet Nazarene (12-5, 8-1) would continue to mount the pressure onto CCSJ early as they shot 16-of-32 (50 percent) in the first half, earning a lead as large as 19 points. Despite the deficit the Crimson Wave gathered some momentum and ended the half on a 14-6 run.
CCSJ kept chipping away at the Tigers lead in the second half, keeping it within striking distance. With less than four minutes remaining in regulation, Ramean Hinton made back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Wave their first lead of the evening.
Trailing by four with a minute to go, Olivet Nazarene made a point-blank layup and two clutch free throws to send the game into overtime.
The first overtime was mirroring the end of regulation as CCSJ held a four-point lead, only to be erased by an Olivet Nazarene timely layup and two made free throws again. Junior Kyrin Dock stole the inbound pass on the final possession of overtime and had a good looking heave from half court, but it was no good and double overtime was needed to determine the winner.
Both teams traded baskets in double overtime but this time, CCSJ had the ball coming out of a timeout with 17 seconds remaining. Dock had the ball in his hands yet again to win it for the Crimson Wave. As he dribbled at the top of the key and let the time wind down, he made his move to the basket and was able to find the cutting senior Quindarius Davis for the right-handed floater that went in with 0.6 seconds left on the clock.
Olivet Nazarene threw up a last second heave from mid court, but it was no good and CCSJ was victorious, knocking off the top-seed in the CCAC. The Crimson Wave were not in any overtime games before the calendar hit 2026 but have now been in two overtime games in the first two weeks of the new year.
CCSJ forced the Tigers to commit 18 turnovers and scored 22 points off of those turnovers. The Crimson Wave's bench also outscored Olivet Nazarene 42 to 13.
