Men's Wrestling Joins American Midwest Conference
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The American Midwest Conference has announced the addition of Marian University and Calumet College of St. Joseph to the Conference as single-sport members.
Marian (Ind.) and Calumet-St. Joseph (Ind.) will join the AMC for the sport of wrestling, beginning in the 2017-18 year.
"We are excited to welcome Marian University and Calumet College of St. Joseph to the American Midwest Conference," said AMC Commissioner Will Wolper. "Like many of our wrestling programs, Marian and Calumet are young, growing programs that continue to demonstrate a commitment to excellence on and off the mat.
In 2017, Marian's first year with wrestling, the Knights finished in sixth-place at the NAIA Regional meet in Davenport, Michigan.
Calumet-St. Joseph finished ninth at the NAIA Midwest Regional in 2016. The Crimson Wave's Scott Pitrowski qualified individually for the NAIA Wrestling National Championships.
"We had to find a conference that we could not only compete in, but would work for us geographically as well," said Calumet-St. Joseph Athletics Director Rick Torres. "We welcome the challenge that has been presented to us and look forward to competing against all the schools in the AMC."
The AMC Wrestling Championship will take place on Feb. 17th at Lindenwood University-Belleville in Belleville, Ill. Wrestlers will compete for a spot in the NAIA Wrestling National Championships that will take place on March 2-3 at the Jacobson Exhibition Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
"The AMC has held two very successful wrestling championships that saw great growth from year one to year two," said Wolper. "With this year's tournament serving as a national qualifying event, the addition of two programs as well as the natural growth we anticipated for year three, the wrestling season will include immense excitement leading up to and including the AMC Wrestling Championship."
The Knights and Crimson Wave join Central Baptist College, Hannibal-LaGrange University, Lindenwood University-Belleville, Lyon College, Missouri Baptist University and Williams Baptist College as the AMC schools that sponsor wrestling.
