Wrestling Earns Three National Spots At AMC Championship
BELLEVILLE, Ill. – After sending one wrestler to the NAIA championships in 2016-17, the Calumet College of St. Joseph squad tripled that number during the 2017-18 campaign. Josh Fuqua, David Whitaker (JR/Chicago, Ill.), and Nick Fowler (JR/Gary, Ind.) will all be taking the trip to Des Moines, Iowa thanks to their individual performances at the American Midwest Conference Wrestling Championships this past weekend.
Fuqua was the individual champion from the 157 weight class. He defeated Tony Bustos from Central Baptist College via fall, Nicholas Olejnik from Missouri Baptist via decision, Nicholas Drendel from William Baptist via decision, and Steven Weathers from Missouri Baptist via technical fall to take the crown.
Whitaker was the other Crimson Wave that left Belleville victorious, winning the 197 weight class in three matches. He defeated Jeffery Burzinski of Lindenwood University-Belleville to start off the afternoon, advanced to defeat Zachary Worm from Marion University, and finally defeated Jaden Davis from Lindenwood University-Bellville to take the title..
Fowler placed third in the 285 weight class, but was a good enough result to punch his tickets to Iowa. Tyler Bernard (SR/Hobart, Ind.) also suited up for the Wave, but lost after four matches (two via bye).
Fuqua, Whitaker, and Fowler will now prepare for the national championships on March 2-3 in Des Moines, Iowa.
