CHANNAHON, Ill. - A couple weeks of preparations culminated in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championship for the Crimson Wave cross country teams on Saturday morning in Channahon, Ill.
The Wave men crossed the finish line in 8th-place overall out of 14 schools, while the women's team wrapped up the 2016 campaign in 11th-place out of 13 competing squads.
"Matt King ran a great race and we were four places better than last year," head coach Rick Torres said. The race started out tactical and we were in the mix of the top five teams through two miles, and then leaders broke it open and we did not respond like we should have - but we were one place away from our team goal."
King set a blazing pace for the CCSJ runners on Saturday with a 26th overall finish - out of 141 runners in the 8K - with a 27:51, leading a strong group of runners who saw three Wave competitors finish in the top 40 and four in the top 45.
Roger Malonda-Pedros came in second at 28:24 (33rd-place overall), Miguel Flores ran a 28:52 (39th) and Deonta Pittman hit the line fourth for the Crimson Wave at 29:16.
Rounding out the top five was Robert Davis at 30:58, good for 61st, and was followed by Luis Munoz (31:36) and James Mills (33:39).
The guys clocked a cumulative time of 3:30:39.5.
