Softball splits with Lourdes
Sylvania, OH - Navigating the changing weather, the Calumet College Softball team traveled to Lourdes University for a Sunday doubleheader, their first games since returning from their spring trip. In game one, the Crimson Wave took a strong lead but the game slowly took a turn and gave the Grey Wolves a 10-5 win. The second game was a close game until a two-run inning gave the Wave a lead they held on to that earned them a 2-0 win.
Game 1- CCSJ 5, Lourdes 10
The top of the Crimson Wave lineup had a good start to game one, as leadoff Roxanne Ines drew a walk and later advanced to second on a passed ball. Freshman Kylee Slack went to plate with two outs and doubled to center field to score Ines and get the Crimson Wave on the board in the 1st inning. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Grey Wolves scored two runs after stringing together a couple of hits and errors from the Crimson Wave continued the inning.
Kenzie Lanman started in the circle for the Crimson Wave, going 3 innings seeing 19 batters with 1 strikeout, 2 walks, 1 HBP, and giving up 6 earned runs.
In the top of the 3rd inning, Ines leadoff with a single, and after two outs Slack singled to put two runners on with Alex Navarro up to bat. Navarro singled to right field, giving Ines the opportunity to score from second and leaving two more runners on base with two outs. Freshman Adelina Staden stepped in the box and came in clutch hitting a 3 run home run and giving the Crimson Wave a lead of 5-2. The bottom of the 3rd inning put the Grey Wolves ahead of the Wave, after a couple of hits and an HBP to load the bases, a single to the right side allowed two runs to score. Another walk loaded the bases, and after getting the first out of the inning a grand slam cleared the bases and put the Grey Wolves ahead 8-5.
The Crimson Wave bats were silenced in the top of the 4th, and in the bottom of the 4th inning, Ines went to the circle for Lanman and shut down the Grey Wolves. In the top of the 5th inning, Slack singled, Navarro doubled, and Priscilla Seniw walked but the Crimson Wave were unable to score. In the bottom of the 5th, after a fielder's choice and a wild pitch, the Grey Wolves had a runner at 3rd base. After a single up the middle, the runner at 3rd scored to give Lourdes a 9-5 lead. The Crimson Wave again left a runner in scoring position on base in the top of the 6th inning after Ines singled and was moved around to 2nd base. In the bottom of the 6th, Lourdes had two runners on and in scoring position as a ground out to Navarro at 2nd scored the Grey Wolves' 10th run of the game.
The top of the 7th inning was the last scoring chance for the Crimson Wave. Slack leadoff the inning with a single, followed by a double from Navarro that advanced Slack to 3rd and a 2 out walk by Tiffanie Brieno loaded the bases. The Crimson Wave couldn't score, leaving the final score 10-5.
Slack led the offense, going a stellar 4-4 with 1 RBI. At the plate, Ines went 2-2 with 2 walks and 2 runs scored, and in the circle had 2 strikeouts, 3 walks, and 2 earned runs.
Game 2- CCSJ 2, Lourdes 0
The Crimson Wave were focused and wanted to build off of game one and at least split with the Grey Wolves. Josselline Monge started in the circle for the Wave, and went the distance, pitching another full 7 inning game shutout with 4 strikeouts. The Crimson Wave and Grey Wolves both went 5 scoreless innings, the Wave collecting 5 hits but never enough to get on the scoreboard. In the Top of the 6th inning, Slack leadoff with a walk and was moved to second by Navarro's sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Grace Elrod singled to left and scored Slack. Brieno pinch hit and doubled to right, scoring Elrod and giving the Crimson Wave 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the 6th inning. Monge and the Crimson Wave defense shut down the Grey Wolves in the bottom of the 6th and 7th innings and finished the day with a 2-0 win.
Ines went 2-3 in game two, and Elrod also went 2-3 with an RBI and run scored.
