Crimson Wave stifle Grace Christian in home opener
CCSJ held Grace Christian to 12-of-51 shooting from the field in its first win of the season on Saturday evening at the Rittenmeyer Center.
Whiting, IN – The Calumet College of St. Joseph women's basketball team earned its first win of the season after beating Grace Christian 67-35 on Thursday, October 30 at the Rittenmeyer Center.
How it Happened
The Wave got off to a slow start collectively, missing 10 of their first 14 shots. Junior Jayonna Smith kept CCSJ afloat scoring seven of the teams 12 first quarter points, along with four rebounds and two steals.
In the second quarter CCSJ outscored Grace Christian 24 to one to take a 23-point lead into halftime. Five different players scored for the Wave in the second quarter, while forcing the Tigers shoot 0-of-10 from the field and commit nine turnovers.
The Crimson Wave's defense continued to disrupt the Tigers in the second half as they shot 2-for-16 from the field in the fourth quarter. For the game, CCSJ forced Grace Christian to commit 32 turnovers and make less than 25 percent of its shots.
The 20-point plus win made it the largest margin of victory by the Wave since CCSJ beat Grace Christian University on January 3, 2019 by 24 points.
Crimson Wave Leaders
Jayonna Smith nearly recorded a triple double as she stuffed the stat sheet with 23 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals, four assists and two blocks. Melissa McCoy had nine points, Divine Woods had eight points, and Ariana Lemons had seven points and six rebounds off the bench.
