Seniors lead the charge at Conference Championship
The Crimson Wave competed in the two-day Conference Championship hosted by the University of St. Francis on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. Seniors Harley Sutton (SR/Hobart, Ind.) and Demetrius Banks lead the charge of battle as they set the tone of the meet on a high note.
Sutton captured the Conference title in the 100m hurdles setting a new school record of 15.25. Finishing with a jump of 1.59m, she sets a new school record for high jump earning her an all conference finish. Sutton was also a member of the third place 4x800 relay breaking another school record and a member of the fourth place 4x400 relay. Banks captures the men's high jump title in a new school and conference record of 2.04 m hitting the national A- standard.
To list the many accolades that were accomplished over the two nights of performance by both teams would be of great length. However, over six school records were broken, over ten individual personal bests were achieved, two national qualifiers hitting A- standards and the highest point finish in the history of men's track and field at Calumet College placing them in fourth. The women's team placed sixth overall with high hopes of placing in the top four in 2020, based on top returners and a talented freshman class.
Excitement and cheers were heard throughout the field, as CCSJ left the track around 10:30 pm on Saturday night. Every athlete, proud of their accomplishments and holding their head high, as they think about where they will be next year at this time. But, the season isn't over. One more dance.
Next up for the Waves, gearing up for the National Championships that will take place Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
