Women’s Volleyball soars past Eagles in CCAC and Home Opener
Whiting, IN - The Calumet College Women's Volleyball team hosted Judson University in the team's first home and conference match-up of the season. Coming off a 3-1 weekend at the Goshen College Tri-Meet, the Crimson Wave were prepped and ready to go against an Eagles team the Wave lost 3-0 to last season.
The Wave started off the first set on top, getting ahead of Judson early and then holding the lead with a tough defense. CCSJ blew past the Eagles for a 25-14 first-set win and started off the match on the right foot. The Wave struggled in the second set, with multiple errors and only 9 kills, the Eagles and Crimson Wave went point-for-point until the final moments. Judson gained a slight lead and held off CCSJ for a 25-23 win, bringing the score to 1-1 going into the third set. The Crimson Wave controlled most of the third and fourth sets getting early leads and cutting down on errors giving CCSJ the momentum to bring home their first CCAC win of the season in 25-19 and 25-18 final sets, securing a 3-1 match win.
Five Crimson Wave athletes reached double digits in the stats columns. Diana Ortuno led the Wave with 16 kills, 5 digs, and a .361 hitting percentage, but close behind was Sincere Northern with 15 kills and 2 blocks. Maria Elena Castorena finished the match with 11 kills, 20 digs, 2 service aces, and 2 blocks and Rebecca Larios had 44 assists with 9 digs. Marina Lopez had 10 digs and Jenine Boyles had 5 blocks.
What's Next?
The Crimson Wave (4-3) are on break until Tuesday, September 6th as they travel to Joliet, IL for the first away CCAC match of the season against St. Francis.
