Women’s Volleyball defeats Governors State in 5-set thriller
University Park, IL - The Calumet College Women's Volleyball team took on the Governors State Jaguars in their third CCAC game of the season. After a tough 3-set loss to St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday, the Crimson Wave were hungry to get back to work. Despite a slow start to the match with a first-set loss, the Wave came back against the Jaguars to win two sets in a row, but GSU forced a fifth set in their fourth set win. The Crimson Wave finished the night off with a 15-10 win in the fifth set, bringing their CCAC record to 2-1.
How it Happened
The Crimson Wave had a slow start to the first set, with only 9 kills and 9 errors, the Wave struggled to catch up to the Jaguars, losing 25-17. In the second set, the Wave took an early lead with an extended service from Sincere Northern and played a cleaner set to just edge out the Jaguars with a 25-20 win.
The Wave held Governors State to their fewest points in the third set and forced 6 errors to give CCSJ a 25-16 win and lead the match 2-1. In the fourth set, the Crimson Wave started off with a strong lead, but a series of GSU serves put the Jaguars back in the game. CCSJ errors gave Governors State enough of a lead to take the win 25-22 and force a fifth set. In the final set, the Wave took an early lead with Marina Lopez serving and played a clean set to take win over the Jaguars 15-10 and win the match in five, 3-2.
Maria Elena Castorena lead the Wave with 18 kills, 18 digs, and 3 service aces. Northern, not far behind, had 11 kills with 12 digs and 3 service aces. Jenine Boyles led the Wave with 3 blocks in addition to 6 kills. Rebecca Larios was all over the court with 43 assists, 3 kills, 7 digs, and 2 blocks.
