Crimson Wave scores its most points in program history with 57-7 win over Oakland City
The CCSJ Sprint Football team dominated defensively and set a record offensively in 57-7 home opener win against Oakland City on Saturday, September 20 at Ray P. Gallivan Field at Jeff Cain Stadium.
Whiting, IN – In its home opener, the Crimson Wave Sprint Football team set a record for its most points scored in program history with 57-7 win over Oakland City at Ray P. Gallivan Field at Jeff Cain Stadium late Saturday evening.
How it Happened
CCSJ went right down the field on their opening possession of their 2025 home opener, driving 70 yards in five plays, capped by Destry Peoples connecting with Nino Barbosa for a 43-yard touchdown pass.
On Oakland City's first play of their first possession, defensive back Quindarius Davis made an electrifying tackle, forcing the ball loose that defensive lineman Tony Madrueno picked up and returned for a touchdown.
In less than three minutes of play, CCSJ had a 14-0 lead.
The Crimson Wave added three more scores before the end of the first quarter as Jamall Warnell rushed for two touchdowns and Zayne Guthrie completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Nino Barbosa.
Five touchdowns along with a successful 2pt conversion in the first quarter marked the most points scored (36) in a quarter by the sprint football team in program history.
On CCSJ's first possession of the second quarter, Peoples completed a 35-yard touchdown to Kato Keohaname.
Despite Oakland City scoring their lone touchdown of the game on the following drive, the Crimson Wave continued to solidify their lead with Guthrie rushing for an 8-yard touchdown and Daymon Johnson making an athletic play for an interception and returned it 47 yards for the final touchdown of the game.
With a 50-point advantage in the second half, running clock was enforced. Neither team scored in the second half and CCSJ cruised to the win.
The defense smothered the opposition all night, limiting the Mighty Oaks to 66 yards of total offense. CCSJ forced Oakland City to commit three turnovers and struggled on third down going 5-of-14.
Crimson Wave Leaders
Junior quarterback Destry Peoples went 5-of-7 for 121 yards and two touchdowns while sophomore Zayne Guthrie went 2-of-2 for 48 yards and one touchdown.
Nino Barbosa had three catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns while Tre Simmons had two receptions for 21 yards. Freshman Kato Keohaname scored his first touchdown of his collegiate career with his lone 35-yard catch.
Jamall Warnell had seven carries for 39 yards and two touchdowns while Kaydarious Jones rushed for 70 yards on four carries. Guthrie ran for an 8-yard touchdown as well.
Defensively, Daymon Johnson had an interception and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown. Quindarius Davis forced a fumble and Tony Madrueno returned it 18 yards for a touchdown. Walter Quinn had an interception as well, and Gabriel Lopez and Alexander Dellaechaie had three tackles each.
Kicker Jeau Vinatieri went 7-for-7 on extra point attempts.
