DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Calumet College of St. Joseph Women's Volleyball team kicked off its season with a two-day, four-match tournament in Dubuque, Iowa. The Crimson Wave faced Michigan-Dearborn and Mount Marty on Friday, August 23 followed by Briar Cliff and host Clarke on Saturday, August 24.
Match 1: Michigan-Dearborn 3, CCSJ 0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-15)
The Crimson Wave had a slow start to their first match of the season, landing 21 kills over three sets. Berta Comino Couceiro led CCSJ with 11 kills in the first match of the season.
Match 2: Mount Marty 3, CCSJ 0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-9)
In the second match, CCSJ struggled and posted 26 errors in the 3-0 loss. Berta Comino Couceiro led the Wave again in kills, this time with seven.
Match 3: Briar Cliff 3, CCSJ 1 (25-8, 25-8, 23-25, 25-18)
In the Wave's first four-set match of the season, CCSJ improved to a total of 28 kills in the match. After a rough first two sets, the Crimson Wave were able to win set three, its first set win of the season. Berta Comino Couceiro finished with 12 kills and 14 digs while Ivana Quinones had eight kills and 11 digs. Iraly Aguirre also had 11 digs and Andrea Matias led the team with 23 assists.
Match 4: Clarke 3, CCSJ 0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-15)
The Wave ended the tournament with three matches of at least 20 kills as they recorded 22 kills against Clarke. CCSJ did commit 18 errors in the three-set loss. Berta Comino Couceiro led the Crimson Wave with 11 kills and 13 digs.
CCSJ will travel to Siena Heights in Adrian, Michigan for a two-day, three-match tournament beginning on Friday, August 30.
