Huntington, IN – On a two-day trip to Huntington, Indiana for the Forester Invitational, the Calumet College of St. Joseph Women's Volleyball team came away with their first win since October 2023.
The Crimson Wave faced the host Huntington, along with Rio Grande on Friday, followed by Wilberforce and IU Columbus on Saturday. Despite only winning three sets the entire tournament, the three CCSJ did win helped Emilier De Jesus earn his first win as the women's head volleyball coach.
"We are so excited to get our first win, especially with all the returners from last season contributing in big ways," De Jesus said. "Everyone is locked in from the athletes to the coaches."
Match 1: Huntington 3, CCSJ 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-12)
The Crimson Wave got off to a sluggish start in the opening match of the invitational, committing 13 errors while notching 16 kills. Berta Comino Couceiro led CCSJ with nine kills in the first match of the season, while Andrea Matias had seven digs.
Match 2: Rio Grande 3, CCSJ 0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-10)
In the second match, CCSJ had its worst performance of the weekend offensively, posting an attack percentage of -.167. Comino Couceiro led the Wave again in kills, this time with five.
Match 3: CCSJ 3, Wilberforce 0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-21)
In the Wave's first win of the season, they recorded 30 kills with an .115 attack percentage. Comino Couceiro had 12 kills, eight digs and three aces. Matias had two aces to go along with 12 digs, while both Cristal Lopez and Teagan Rath had 14 assists each. Yanilette Diaz contributed as well with seven kills and five digs.
Match 4: IU Columbus 3, CCSJ 0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-11)
CCSJ ended the weekend with three matches of at least 16 kills as they recorded 17 against IU Columbus. Diaz led the Wave with six kills in the final match and Lopez ended with 17 assists, the most of any Crimson Wave player during the opening weekend.
CCSJ will now return home for two scrimmages against Prairie State and South Suburban, before its home opener against Marian-Ancilla on Monday, August 25.
